I can't connect to the mail server

There are several reasons for faliures and error messages on sending of mail. The instructions below should help to resolve the issue, otherwise please feel free to contact us for further advice.

Check your Outlook Express settings:

  1. From the Tools menu select Accounts...
  2. Select the Mail tab and highlight the mail account for the domain you have hosted with Web One Hosting.
  3. Click the Properties button
  4. First check that your email address appears correctly in both "Email Address" AND "Reply Address" fields. If one of these is wrong or blank then sending of mail will often fail.
  5. Select the Servers tab and look for the lower section titled Outgoing Mail Server. Click the checkbox labelled My server requires authentication.
  6. Click the Settings... button and ensure Use the same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
  7. Click OK to close the Settings window and OK again to close the Mail Properties window.
  8. Finally, click Close to close the Mail Accounts window
  9. Try sending mail again.

If mail still fails it is likely that your ISP is blocking port 25 (the virtual 'port' that most servers use to relay outgoing mail) through their network (some ISP's do this to try and stop spammers using their network). If this is the case then our servers will also accept outgoing mail to port 26. You can configure Outlook Express as follows:-

  5. Select the Advanced tab
  6. At the top under "Server port numbers" change the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) to: 26
  7. Click OK to close the Settings window and OK again to close the Mail Properties window.
  8. Finally, click Close to close the Mail Accounts window
  9. Try sending mail again.

Other email programmes have similar setups and information can be provided on request.

When all else fails, you can use your ISP's outgoing mail server if available. If you let us know your ISP then we have a list of available outgoing mail servers.
